There are various transportation options available for getting between La Fortuna and Puerto Viejo. However, there are 3 that are most popular with travellers, these are:
The Easy way ($55, 5.5hrs):
The simplest route involves getting a shuttle bus to pick you up from your hostel and take you directly to Puerto Viejo. There are tonnes of travel agencies in and around La Fortuna almost all of which offer this option, the average price for one of these shuttles is $50/60US.
The Fun way ($95, 8hrs):
The fun route, also offered by most travel agencies in La Fortuna incorporates a four hour white water rafting trip down the Sarapiqui River. This is a great way to liven up a boring travel day! It will however set you back between $90/100US but may be well worth it if you’re considering the shuttle.
The Cheap way ($13, 9hrs):
Finally, the route your most likely here for, the cheap way! Unsurprisingly the cheapest route involves public buses. If you want to make the entire journey within the same day, then you need to start at 9:10am. The first leg of the journey is a bus to San Jose, you can buy your tickets for the 9:10am trip from the ‘Lava Tours’ office at the bus station you will depart from (see map). I recommend buying your tickets at least the day before you are planning to leave, tickets cost roughly $4US.
This bus arrives at the ‘7-10 Bus Terminal’ in San Jose at approximately 1/1:30pm, you will need to exit this bus station and walk to the MEPE bus station 1 block away, the walk takes 5 minutes, see map. Once here you can buy a ticket for the second leg of your journey to ‘Puerto Viejo’, you should make it with enough time to catch the 2pm bus at a cost of roughly $9US, however if the first bus is delayed there are others running at 4 & 6pm. A total cost of around $13US, Bargain!
Hope this helps a few of you getting from A to B!
When I came to the decision that I wanted to travel, initially I had no clue what I was doing!? There was no guide and no obvious place to start… After days of searching the internet for everything I might possibly need, I set off on my journey. Only to find that flights several days later had been half the price, I’d massively overpacked and my accommodation although cheap was less than ideal, and so the ‘Simple Travel Steps’ seed was planted. The site is first and…. Read More
